Grieving & Bereavement

This large, non-profit health system has an extensive bereavement program as well as pastoral and spiritual care services at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Additionally, some grief support groups and services can be found in the System’s calendar.

Hoag is a non-profit, faith-based hospital in Orange County, California that offers bereavement services and support groups through its Pastoral Care Department.

Based in Lakewood, CA, this non-profit hospice offers a variety of grief counseling and bereavement services to families.

With offices in Los Angeles and Woodland Hills, Our House offers grief support groups and education for children, teen, and adults. Their services include a complementary video series on YouTube.

This TrinityCare Hospice Program, in partnership with Beach Cities Health District, offers bereavement support groups for children, teenagers, and adults (including seniors) that address multiple forms of loss, including that of a spouse, child, or parent.  General bereavement groups are also offered. Reservations are required.

Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center

The SAS program specializes in bereavement support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Groups are offered 15 times per year in the South Bay, West Loss Angeles, and San Fernando Valley areas of California. Reservations are required.

The mission of American Psychosocial Oncology Society is to advance the science and practice of psychosocial care for people affected by cancer.

The Neighborhood Church has its own Pastoral Care and Prayer Chain services for those who have lost a loved one, and also works in conjunction with The Compassionate Friends (see below), who specialize in helping those who have lost a child, and Good Grief Support Groups, based on the book “Good Grief,” by Granger E. Westberg.

South Bay – Los Angeles Chapter
This self-help organization offers support to families who have experienced the death of a child. This chapter meets on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7:00 pm, in Palos Verdes, California.

Los Angeles Chapter
The Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles has on-going (non-sectarian) bereavement support groups, during the day and evening (phone: 310-540-6646). Also, JFS offers bereavement support services that include children and teens through the Aleinu Family Resource Center.ia.

The bereavement support groups at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church, for adults, are held at various times throughout the year. The groups are closed, with a ten week cycle. The focus is on grief educational information and mutual support. This medical center and hospice provides a variety of bereavement services, including drop-in support groups held every Monday, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, and every Thursday, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM (except holidays).  Organized, six-week grief support groups are also offered.

With locations all over the country, Odyssey offers a large variety of bereavement services, including informational materials, condolence correspondence, bereavement letters, memorial services, counseling, support groups, and even a holiday program.

This Rolling Hills Estates, CA chapter of GriefShare is a nondenominational group that features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics.  You are welcome to begin attending the group at any session.  Each is “self-contained” so you do not have to attend in sequence.  For more information please call 310-832-9109, for the facilitator, Donna Chamberlain, or 310-519-9406, for the church’s main line.

Based in Redondo Beach, CA, Mr. Attrell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Thanatologist, specializing in death, dying, and bereavement.  He provides individual counseling and other services in private practice.  Clients may be all ages, grieving any kind of death.  Please call 310-379-2999, or 310-750-7334, for more information.

The American Hospice Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, supports programs that serve the needs of terminally ill and grieving individuals of all ages. Our Foundation advances hospice concepts by, training school professionals who work with grieving students, educating employers and managers about the needs of grieving employees, creating tools to help hospices reach out to their communities, promoting improved hospice benefits in managed care organizations, and initiating research on consumer needs and preferences in end-of-life care.

Bereaved Parents of the USA (BP/USA) was founded in 1995 by a group of bereaved parents from across the country. Their sole purpose for organizing this group was to offer support, understanding, encouragement and hope to other bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents after the death of their children, brother, sister or grandchildren. This purpose remains the thrust of BP/USA today.

The Centering Corporation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education and resources for the bereaved.

The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family.

The Single Fathers Due to Cancer program is dedicated to helping the thousands of fathers who each year lose their spouses to cancer and must adjust to being sole parents.
