Beat the odds of feeling bad!!
Of course the odds of feeling bad are high when you or your loved one is diagnosed
with cancer or other life-threatening illness. Negative emotions that ruin the quality of life are frequently not properly addressed in patients and even less for the families. Clinicians, but also families and patients themselves perceive depression, anxiety, fear and worry as expected and unavoidable consequences of a serious illness. Beat the Odds sessions prove that assumption wrong and help free patients and the families from the grip of negative emotions. The problem is that we assume that only the things we know and understand can happen.
Quality of life primarily depends on emotions that we experience, depends on our ability to experience hope, meaning and joy in daily life. Our capacity to experience these emotions depends in turn on the quality of support that we can receive in difficult times. Beat the Odds program helps patients and their loved ones effectively deal with doubt, fear, and blame and lead meaningful, quality lives despite the diagnosis. The challenge of being diagnosed with cancer is difficult enough; in addition, already complex family relationships and interpersonal issues often complicate matters. Many offered interventions are based on intricate theories that are frequently difficult to apply.
Program description
Our program is not a support group. While we provide support to
participants, Beat the Odds program focuses on providing a comprehensive and practical learning in effective ways of handling all aspects of cancer experience. Our program is provided in the form of ten weekly interactive classes (workshops). In each class participants learn new skill sets to decrease distress and promote healing which is followed by discussion and practical exercises in applying learned skills. Any effective learning requires homework but you will find assignments to be joyful and inspiring. We recommend that you participate in all classes as each builds and expands on the skills presented on the preceding ones. Beat the Odds classes start at 6 pm and end at 8:30 pm. Refreshments are available.
