Here are links to some videos that illustrate just some of the healing mechanisms in our bodies. The videos below are the favorites of our Beat the Odds classes and workshops. They give inspiration for mental imagery work as well as help develop trust in our natural healing systems that have been removing cancer cells from our bodies since before we were born.

It is believed that these and other healing systems respond to nervous, hormonal and neuropeptide stimulation depending on the state of our thoughts and emotions. Also brain receives information about the state of the immune system. The field of the study of these processes is called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). Different skills and techniques that we apply in the Beat the Odds program has been shown to increase the function of some of these immune cells (for example laughter increasing the activity of Natural Killer Cells).

The first video shows how an actual macrophage (a form of specialized white blood cell) is chasing and then eventually devouring a bacteria. Macrophage (from Greek big devourer) is able to follow different bacteria through chemotaxis (a chemical attraction) and eventually catch up to them and actually eat them through the process of phagocytosis (from Greek devouring).

In this animation you can see the Natural Killer Cell (NK) in action that are our primary way of identifying and eliminating cancer or virus infected cells from our bodies. When NK cells are active, they release substances that attract other NK cells to this site. In the latter part you can see how they reach a cancerous tumor and penetrate it with a destructive force. Laughter has been shown consistently to increase the activity of Natural Killer Cells.

Here you can see how it looks under the microscope – how Natural Killer Cells (smaller round ones) identify and eliminate cancer cells (elongated ones) by inducing their self-destruction called apoptosis and turning them into dead read blobs.

Here, with the use of “optical laser tweezers” and a super-resolution microscope, you can see in more detail Natural Killer Cells identifying and eliminating diseased cells.

Another serial killer identifying and eliminating cancer cells is a Cytotoxic T Cell. In this video the actual live Cytotoxic T Cells are visualized through in vivo fluorescent optical imagining by the use of a special dye. Similarly some cancer cells are visualized. The viewer can see how the Cytotoxic T Cells patrol our bodies and squeeze through healthy tissue (that is dark) to find cancer cells. Very good narration.

Granulocytes are the most common white blood cell but were not suspected of having any anticancer properties. Here the researchers placed human granulocytes with human cervical cancer cells in a petri dish. You will see large cancer cells indicated by yellow arrows and small granulocytes ferociously attacking and destroying them. Below is a citation of a more recent article by the same researchers showing cancer killing activity (CKA) in circulating leukocytes.
