Dr. Wirga & Psych Oncology After graduating from medical school, Dr. Wirga read Dr. Carl Simonton's book titled, "Getting Well Again," and was inspired by it. At the time, there was no specialty for psych oncology, so he started his residency in pathology.
His patients were in significant distress and he asked them in groups he arranged to apply the teachings of Dr. Simonton. He switched from radiation to oncology.
Dr. Wirga attended Dr. Simonton's 1-week conference for the European Association of Cancer Supporters in Germany and has since been in cooperation with Dr. Simonton.
In 1997, Dr. Simonton offered Dr. Wirga the position of International Qualitative Control. They worked in both Europe and the United States to develop the programs further.
Dr. Wirga became a supervisor and trainer in his program and, after his death, became his successor as director of the Simonton Cancer Center. He is now the medical director of Psychosocial Oncology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
